NIGERIA: Citizens Deported Again?

The 171 Nigerians returnees from Libya on touch-down at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos yesterday.

Deportation of illegal foreign nationals and migrants is a routine exercise in various countries however the deportation of Nigerians from various countries in recent times have escalated. According to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP), no fewer than 1,134 Nigerians residing abroad without resident permits have been deported majorly from USA, UK, Libya, Saudi Arabia, and some member countries of the European Union and Asia.

35 Nigerians Deported from UK

It was gathered that the reason more and more people determine to migrate from Nigeria is the result of worsening economy, security and political factors which invariably has led to poor health facilities, dilapidated infrastructures, rising food prices, poor transportation services. Others include security threats, poor education, high unemployment.


The Nigerian geographical landscape is blessed with unlimited potentials which has largely remained untapped due to corruption, inefficient political leadership, poor policies and policy implementation.

In recent times the President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari has recieved open letters from citizens and groups demanding greater sense of belonging in the country. The real or perceived trend of nepotism and selective justice are factors that reduce faith, discourage the citizen's from depositing their best sacrifices for the country and also increase agitations, militancy, destruction of lives and properties through societal ills and finally migration to foreign lands.

Increased efforts should be made through qualitative leadership policies and implementation that will ultimately lead to both local and foreign-direct investments, increase standard of infrastructure and corruption reduction so as to enable quick recovery of the economy from the recession and the recreation of millions of jobs lost in the past year.
